The Shepherd’s Vigil, 05/04/22

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses.   Acts 1:8

There are a few scriptures on the walls around the Flamingo campus facility that are like this one.  We get power from the Holy Spirit of God SO THAT we are empowered to live a daring life of following Christ.  Yes, following Christ is a daring adventure.

The book of acts is described as “scenes of dramatic action, danger and suspense”.  Sounds like a good novel or movie.  The book of The Acts of the Apostles is the adventure story of the founding of the faith community, the church, and it is certainly a dramatic action story.

This adventure is still going on in the life of the Church.  The people of God following Jesus, sight visions of God’s saving work regularly.  God is on the move doing exciting things and that means the church is involved in dramatic action.  This is an exciting adventure to follow Christ.

The church finds a way to do community and follow Christ no matter what the context.  The early church faced the Roman empire and persecution.  We face transitions and difficult decisions.  However, throughout history the church has thrived the most when we have struggled through difficult times and transitioned to new life.

So, bring on the struggles and transitions.  We are the community of faith with the power of the Holy Spirit and are ready for the next step in the adventure of following Christ.
